Massachusetts has not elected a Republican president since Reagan. What most people would never guess though is that Bush actually carried 40% of the votes in Mass in 2004, higher than expected. People seem to think that politics here are parrallel with Sweden or Amsterdam, not quite. We acutally have an initiative on the ballot this year to cut the state income tax in half to 2.5%. Mitt Romney and our present governor Deval Patrick are polar opposites so this state like any other can follow the normal American trends of political winds, but at a federal level (presidential & senate) Mass will reliably elect a democrat. Obama has got this one for sure.

Along with California, liberal Massachusetts is as blue as any state in the union. It would be an epic catastrophe for the Democrats to lose this blue bastion of progressive politics to the Republicans, regardless of whether or not Mitt Romney is on John McCain's ticket. Look for a 20%-30% margin of victory for Barack Obama come November 2008 in deep blue Massachusetts.

Racism will be an important factor here. If it brings Obama down, get ready for FOUR MORE YEARS.

It might be closer than other years, but nobody will be shocked when this one goes blue. If Romney is on the GOP ticket and Obama shoots himself in the foot a couple more times, maybe it gets a little closer.

Let's see here, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry are the Senators here, yep, Obama has this one.

The polls are a little closer than the other NE states, despite the heavy Kennedy backing for Obama. There's a heavy Hillary supporting sore loser component in Massachusetts, but it won't be close by November.

Obama will not win it as big as Hillary would, or as a Kennedy might, but he will win it. And when it comes to electoral votes thats all that counts

This state is not in play but the McCain camp will spend some money here to force Obama to do the same

More like a 2.5 really in terms of competitiveness. I was surprised to see that Massachusetts is not trending as strongly Democratic as it usually does. There has been a trend indicated in recent polling suggesting that Obama runs fairly weakly in the Bay State. Is the state trending Republican? I don't think so. Put Hillary on the ballot here and she wins by 25 points. But Obama is only winning here by 9-12 points. Seems to me that he's running weakly among conservative Catholic Democrats that really make up the heart and soul of politics in that state. This is a trend that is evident in parts of the Midwest and Northeast too. Obama will have no trouble energizing liberals in this state, but the rank and file, many of whom supported Hillary in the primary, are not migrating to the Obama camp. I still think that Obama will win this state, but don't be surprised to see that the margin of victory will be weaker for the Democrats than in past years here. Mitt Romney's presence on the GOP ticket could be worth a couple of extra votes here too.
