Update: This ones over. McCain has called in the fire and pissed on the dogs (or something like that) The economy finished the GOP off here.

Original Comment: I'd give the edge to Obama, but McCain has some room to grow, and could well make it competitive. The local Democrats aren't much help to the national campaign, and the voter base tends to the conservative end of the Democratic party, all of which will help McCain. But probably not enough. Hang on, this ones going to be real interesting.

Update: McCain decided to give up on Michigan. This move hurts Republicans running for office here. There was no ground strategy to attack the utter failures of Gov Granholm. Just another bad move in a badly ran campaign.

8/19/08: Git has a good pulse on the situation here in my home state. McCain's been pounding the TV air waves here with ads. 4 stars right now, but I feel something happening here, theres plenty of time left for Obama to blow this thing, especially after that sorry performance at the Brokeback conference.

If - as I suspect - race trumps self interest among 'white' identified voters, McSAME will edge out Obama.

To be fair, there's also the problem of Obama's conservative approach to labor policy.

There is one other key to Michigan. The 2nd Amendment crowd. If McCain is able to weild it effectively, Michigan falls to the red side. Romney would be the key to Michigan, and to the White House, but I don't see McCain agreeing. Without the electoral votes from this state, I can't see Obama being elected. There will be lots of money spent in the Great Lake state this year trying to convince these people that one candidate can turn things around. Excellent battleground. It doesn't get more up for grabs for such a valuable prize.

This is normally a state that leans democratic due to a strong union presence along with an ambivalence towards free trade. but mccain might make some inroads here with blue collar, conservative democrats who don't care for obama. statewide, the democratic party is not in good shape there either. the mayor of detroit is mired in scandal, the democratic governor has low approval rates, and the state has double digit unemployment numbers. all of this might not be good news for democrats and the obama campaign. obama has a slight lead here, but mccain leads in some polls too, suggesting that it could go either way. michigan hasn't voted republican in a national election in over 20 years.

I think there is room for McCain to take it. There have been rumblings that Michigan could go Republican, and with an Independent friendly candidate like McCain it could happen.

Obama should win it, but if McCain chooses Romney, it could be close. The Democrats really messed up with the delegate controversy, and Michigan is blue only because of labor, which Obama hasn't really secured.
