PA will remain blue as it has in previous elections. Yes there is a big rural and social conservative base in PA but it can not compete with the Philly-Pittsburgh base, not to mention the endorsements of both Gov. Rendell & Senator Bob Casey. PA chose Kerry in 2004 and dumped Rick Santorum in 2006. MCCain & Palin are wasting their dollars campaigning so strongly in PA, they should have been in Florida, Missouri, and Ohio instead.

Update: Polling numbers show this state moving steadily into the Obama column. Unless something happens to reverse the trend, this one is going Dem.

Original comment: Very much in play, and very much a microcosm of the national election.

With Ohio, this is a must win state in the north for both candidates. Lose them both, and somebody is out of it.

Tom Ridge as a VP choice might make PA interesting, but the redneck faction will insure that Ridge's pro-choice/intelligence stance will make him and impossible choice for McCain. PA wasn't fooled by dubya in 2004 and despite the media claiming this is a battleground state I'd be quite surprised if PA goes to the GOP in 2008. But it's still too early to tell.

Traditionally, Pennsylvania has been a bell-weather state for the rest of the union. And for that, I would give the edge to the Democrats here. But Pennsylvania is actually going to be somewhat competitive as John McCain has been giving more attention to it, touring the Keystone State with its beloved former Governor and favorite son, Tom Ridge. But ultimately, a well-run political machine run by current Democratic governor, Ed Rendell, will likely mean a Democratic victory in that state this November.

Pennsylvania may be politically the most diverse state in the nation. It has been since 1776; its political history is far more interesting than that of any other state in the Union. Both the most authentic radicals and the most backward Rick Santorum-types have come from the state. I don't think it will ever be a slam dunk for either party.

If New Hampshire was any indication, many 'liberals' [who now say they're for Obama] won't actually vote for him.

This state's a toss-up.

Obama has been leading by about 5 points, kind of the same ratio as national. Now, if he picked Ed Rendel as running mate, he'd be home free with this state. McCain would have a much better chance if he chose Tom Ridge, but he can't afford to take on a pro-choice VP.
