I guess the recently elected democratic governor & senator (Jim Webb) might paint a bigger picture though. Also people from all over the world live in northern Virginia and along with record voter turnout Virginia becomes very competitive.

 | EschewObfuscation (71) 10/30/2008 | I see this state trending (with the most unreliable polls I've ever seen, all year) back from solidly Obama toward a McCain comeback, probably too close to call. If Obama, outspending McCain 3 to 1, with practically the entire press in pom-pom pumping overdrive, and a 30 minute paid infomercial, which they changed the start of a World Series game for, doesn't take this state, what on earth could make it go democrat? And, could that infomercial have been any duller?

 | abichara (67) 10/29/2008 | Virginia will likely be a swing state in the next election. Throughout this past decade the state has been trending more Republican, but that's changing. The rural areas remain strongly Republican, but the suburbs around Washington D.C. and to a lesser extent the Tidewater region are starting to trend Democratic. That should be troubling news to the Republicans. Still, I think the GOP is favored to keep the state, but unlike past years, the Democrats will try to contest it, and they have a decent shot at winning it, especially if they do better than expected this year.
UPDATE: This state is trending solidly for Obama. Demographic changes in the Washington suburbs, along with strong Democratic trends in the Tidewater region have helped seal the deal for him. Expect about a 5 point victory for Obama here.

 | irishgit (159) 10/07/2008 | Update: Well, Obama's still spending and the candidates are still worried. Move this one up to virtually in play.
Original comment: Tough call. This one is either going to be close or a GOP cakewalk. Too early to tell. If Obama stops spending in September, it is a sure sign he has seen something bad in the polls.

 | CanadaSucks (51) 08/19/2008 | Certainly up for grabs and a serious battleground state. The primary voter turnout for dems has GOPers worried- but the thought of an Obama presidency (or anyone who isn't some good ol' boy) will have the rednecks out voting in droves. It will be a battle of the will of intelligentsia-Northern-Virginia dems versus the meth-lab/gun-lovin' Richmondites. Stay tuned, VA will be ugly.

 | Drummond (60) 08/12/2008 | This state could become one of the bigger stories of the 2008 campaign. Democrats have been doing very well here and Obama is very popular. If he takes Virginia, he may win without Ohio.

 | GenghisTheHun (184) 02/25/2008 | Since the end of World War II, Virginia has only gone Democrat twice, but because of the weakness of the GOP this year, it is likely to go Democrat.

 | zuchinibut (46) 02/24/2008 | Virginia is a state that has been Republican in recent history, however, it is not overwhelmingly so. Most of the state is fairly conservative, but the DC suburbs of Northern Virginia are a growing area that is filled more and more with highly-educated, liberal voters. It is still likely a Republican state, but it is worth campaigning in.
