Colosseum 5

Everyone knows about the structure. When you see it, you know what it is. You know what has happened inside its walls. Perhaps you even saw it come back to live in Gladiator! Regardless, this is one of the main attractions in Rome. Keep an eye out for all of the kitty cats, they are everywhere!

The Coliseum in Rome is one of the most spectacular artifacts in the world. There is so much history in this building, it really can’t be described. Located in the heart of the city, it is easily accessible on foot, as well as by public transportation. If you visit Rome or Italy for that matter, you must see the Coliseum.

The Colosseum is breathtaking when you pop your head out of the Metro station across the street. For all its majestic beauty, the Romans are hell-bent on destroying this timeless marvel.
First, forget all the postcards and airbrushed pictures you've seen. The thing is in serious decay. It is not sand colored. It is black. It is fenced off 360 degrees. I feel sorry for the guy who photoshops that fence out of every single picture.
When you stand in line to go inside, you see more carnies than you would anywhere in the world. Don't waste your time paying the "gladiators" to take a picture with them. What you pay them for a picture costs approximately 3 times what they paid for their costumes. If you want a souvenir, there are literally thousands of people standing around selling them. Take your time and look because some are actually pretty good quality.
Once you get to the booth, well, it sucks if you aren't an EU citizen. Americans pay upwards of $50 for entrance per person (not child discounts). And once you're inside.... most of it is blocked off. There is a huge wooden floor contrasting with the rest of the building, covering up most of the underside. The rest is well, stairs. Most of them are blocked off, too. There is an elevator for the lazy, but I believe you have to pay to ride it. Once you walk around and take pictures from every angle, you will walk back and forth like 8 more times hoping to see something you missed. You won't see it. Thats what you just paid all that money for.

It is a true wonder, but ruined by the locals. Go to Athens instead; you will see greater wonders cared for by people who respect what they represent.

Undeniably a monumental edifice, but ravaged by time (and tourists). This was an engineering marvel in its time, and the fact that it has stood for a couple of thousand years is testament to the engineers and builders responsible for its construction. However, if you want to see a better preserved example of a Roman colosseum or amphitheater, the Arena in Verona is much more interesting (and they regularly perform operas there every summer).

The most important monument in the world (if not the most beautiful). The souvenir Martians would take when coming back from a vacation to Earth.

Rome absolutely rocks. It never sleeps. If you are young and wanting to have fun, check out the 'pub crawl' and experience some of the coolest bars in the vicinity of the Colosseum and the Spanish Steps!

Like with all of the Roman ruins, it was hard to conceive that this was where it all happened. Sure, it's in need of repair, but it's better than what we Americans consider "old". As huge as you can imagine it is.

This place is so awesome to see in real life, especially after Gladiator. It's imposing and amazing to see such old construction. The really worthwhile thing, though, is to pay for the English tour. I learned a lot of really interesting things.

If you go to Rome, the Colosseum is definitely worth seeing. It is located amist ancient ruins so the whole area is a good place to wander. The Colosseum is a bit dilapidated from its hayday. A large portion of the outer structure is now gone. If you pay the $6, you can go inside and wander around the walkway that surrounds the arena.

Only the Italians know how to destroy a landmark. Although in near ruins it is still amazing. Skip the audio tour (which costs $10 US) and take the free guided tour by an archeologist.

Even if the structure is one of the most amazing ever built, it sure is not kept well. Work is always on-going, and the walls are black from pollution and full of holes. Fix that god-damned thing!

A very big, impressive place. As an American, it is truly impressive to walk around the outside of the Colosseum and see side by side a modern cosmopolitan city and these beautiful ancient sculptures. The US just doesn't haven't anything to compare. My experience was a little soured by all the vendors walking around trying to sell gladiator hats, however. Who said that tackiness was reserved for Americans...

Truly an amazing sight to see. Massive and complex it's amazing that it's still standing especially considering it's location. Really neat to just stroll around and look at it all. To touch walls with so much history.

Fake 'gladiators' in cheesey costumes that aren't worthy of Disneyland. Yes, Disneyland. Plus they want you to pay -- can you believe it? -- to take their picture. Yuk.

I love history and I think it is amazing to visit places that are so old and just imagine what happened there at some point.
