ItemImageDesigned by the neo-classical architect Juan de Villanueva. It was originally meant to be a natural sciences museum until Joseph Bonapart redesignated it as an art museum. It opened in 1819 and was one of the worlds first public art galleries. It owns more than 9000 pieces of art. Not as good as the Louvre but definitely impressive in its own right. LOVED, absolutely LOVED the Goya stuff.

Las Meninas is the greatest painting ever made, with it alone is a trip to the Prado necessary, beautiful museum with an outstanding collection of Titian, Rubens, Bosch, Durer, Brueghel, Rembrandt, Carravagio, Raphael, Goya, El Greco, Murillo, and Velasquez. Plus the treasure of the Dauphin and the incredible Roman statues really completed my tour.

The collection at the Prado museum was just incredible. El Greco, Goya,Velazuez - just incredible. And its so close to the Reina Sofia, which you have to check out...see Guernica by Picasso-it's huge! Both museums are awesome.

The best museum I've ever visited; it beats the Louvre any day of the week. A visit to Velázquez's Las Meninas and Las Lanzas is a must. Check too works by Goya, Botticelli, El Bosco, El Greco, as well as many other Spanish, Dutch, French and Italian masters. Plus, the nice building is located in a really pleasant and beautiful area of the city; Near the Jerónimos church, the Casón del Buen Retiro, the Retiro Park, the Jardín Botánico... enjoy a walk trough this lovely area and if you still need more art-soaking visit the nearby Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia museums.

My husband spent two weeks in Madrid and spent three of those days in the Prado. El Greco's paintings were magnificent. There were several Rembrandts also. Word of caution! The museum is free on Sundays and if you don't like crowds, go on another day. The line to get in stretched over a block long.

NO DOUBT the best location of this kind in the entire world. Goya, Velázquez, el Greco (and these are just the most famous spanish painters...), an impressing amount of chefs-d'oeuvre of all times. Less than one km away from the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia museum, where you can find great pictures by Picasso (one for all: Guernica at the reina Sofia), Miró, Dalí, Fontana...a paradise for all of you people that spent an entire week in the Louvre;-)

The building itself isn't in great shape, but the art collection at El Prado is unbelievable. Plan to spend at least one day there, although more time would be better.
