Yay, Im at the Pantheon..... (Crickets, Crickets)........ So the history behind the structure is interesting, mainly due to its age, but its dark, and, well, empty..... ANYWAY, there is a great pizza joint right around the corner and down the street a little bit, which I highly recommend - if your standing facing the structure, head to the right corner of the building and continue down the street towards the Four Rivers Fountain. About half way, stop at the pizza place on the left. You will thank me.

The Pantheon is clearly a place to visit while in Rome. The building, and surrounding square, is filled with history that you feel when you go and visit the building. The inside of the Pantheon is amazing, filled with various sculptures and portraits, which only adds to the beauty of the building.

Coming unawares from narrow cobbled streets upon the 'Piazza della Rotonda' and onto the sudden physicality of the 'Pantheon' is rewarding in itself.

Agrippa, Emperor Augustus' son-in-law, ordained the construction of this temple in 27 A.D., seemingly consecrated to Mars and Venus, divinities upon whom the Julian-Clauidian family claimed protection. Around 120 A.D., Emperor Hadrian rebuilt the temple after the devastating fire of 80 A.D., in which shape it still stands. The designation 'Pantheon' addresses a collection of gods. Originally, visitors climbed stairs to enter the building.

Contrast between the monumentality of the interior and the simplicity of design is remarkable, from the marble floor to the columnade, the statutary and sepulchres, including that for Renaissance artist Raphael. Since the early 600s, Pope Boniface III consacrated the edifice as the Church of Saint Mary of Martyrs.

The great vault of the Pantheon was the largest of its day and still challenges any similar architectural endeavour today, including the five rows of 28 fabulous concentric squares that rise to the 27 feet wide circular opening in the center of the ceiling, which allows sunlight to enter - and yet not precipitation.

One of the great gems of Roman archeteture also one of the greatest structures ever built in the West. Makes most things built in the 20th century in the Western world look ugly and idiotic in comparism. Logic rules with the Pantheon. A template for many beautiful buildings to follow. The grandeur that was Rome...

I can't rate any of the historic sites in Italy under a 5 because they are all absolutely astonishing! The Pantheon is no exception! Absolutely magnificent!

The Pantheon (which means "all gods") was in perfect condition when I visited Rome in 1991. The rough walls, solid and massive, could be thought to reflect the splendor of ancient Rome. Particularly interesting was the opening in the dome roofing. No wonder that Rafael, the greatest portrait artist who died of a fever in his 20s, asked to be buried in a tomb beneath the flooring in the Pantheon.

Visiting the Pantheon was a wonderful experience. It is a engineering marvel. It is beautiful. Knowing that the huge bronze doors are original is mind-boggling. Plus I had the best spaghetti ever in a little sidewalk cafe across the street.

Very majestic for a spot in the middle of congested Rome. Very powerful feeling to be inside this very ancient spot. Read up on its history prior to visiting, makes the trip more worthwhile.

history at it's best. I recomend visiting once in the day and once at night. sitting below the pillars at night with a bottle of wine and my friends just looking up at the stunning structure was maginificant.

Amazing. Find out the history of this architectural work of art and you'd be amazed too. I strongly suggest a visit during mass and listening to the way the choir's songs echo in the building.

I was struck by this structure's thickness more than anything else. It has been standing for nearly 2000 years, and when you see it, you will understand why. This is one solid, solid structure, packed in between a couple of structures which are probably 1800 years younger -it really is impressive to see the contrast.
