Built in the 14th Century by Taddeo Gaddi over the widest part of the Armo River. It has been rebuilt and restored many times because of floods. It known for its jewellery shops and has a long standing history with gold and sliversmiths. It was the only bridge in Florence to survive WWII. In 1966 a huge flood wiped out the shops but the bridge was still standing. (Add picture)

Pretty much a commercial enterprise dedicated to gold and jewelry, but it's not as if this is something that someone thought of just a couple of years ago. The Ponte has a long history in this regard. It's a hallmark of the Florence landscape, and one of those things you gotta see if in Florence, as touristy as it might be. Besides, it is a bridge that links some other important cultural destinations in the city.

A little disappointing to be honest. The bridge itself was pretty normal, besides the fact that there were expensive jewelry stores and restaurants all over it...If you're only in Florence for a few days (which I was) you can afford to skip it.

Unlike other tourists, i did not visit ponte vecchio in the day time. I suggest walking the bridge on a summer evening with a warm breeze. Walking through the ghosts of the day can be very romantic.

Though beautiful, the Ponte Vecchio is more of a tourist trap than attraction. Shops lined the street and were geared toward tourists. Still, it was Italy and I have to give it a 4.

A four for the bridge because it's just too crowded. There should be some limitations of shops and display areas on it but it's difficult because there have been. When I first saw it, I was disappointed because I expected something like the great bridge on Canal Grande in Venice, something more elaborate architecturally. But still, it belings to the city as the Statue of Liberty to NYC.
