I've enjoyed my visits to Barcelona and especially liked seeing all the Gaudi buildings that survived the revolution and subsequent destruction of the spirit under the heel of Generalisimo Franco (The fascist regime despised Gaudi, but to its credit, refrained from destroying much of his work).

Absolutely unique in church art, this building continues to be built. About twenty years of work remain to be done. The great architect and artist Antonio Gaudi designed and worked on it for decades. Soon after he died, the Spanish Civil War broke. The "progressive" anarchists burned the church, Gaudi's models, his plans and his workshop. This was a true crime against mankind, but that is what anarchism was all about--crime and destruction of civilization.

This is just about the most unusual structure that you'll ever see - Sagrada Familia is part Disneyland, part comic book, part haunted house, and part Gothic fortress. I still haven't decided if I liked it or not, but it definitely made an impression on me. For a few euros, you can take an elevator up one of the towers, and wander down the maze of passageways and spiral staircases back towards the earth. The towers are immense, and you get a fantastic view of Barcelona from the top. From what I understand, the thing is finally due to be completed in 2016 or so.

La Sagrada Familia (the church of the Holy Family if memory serves) is without argument, the highlight of any tour of Barcelona. What started as a vision of the architect Antoni Gaudi was tragically cut short by his death by being run over by a tram relatively soon into the initial construction. Gaudi not being one for written plans, there was no permanent record of how the structure was to be completed. This has led to rather disappointing results as his successors clearly did not have the same talents and vision, resulting is conflicting styles that do not reconcile with Gaudi's original work. Nevertheless, the entire incomplete project has a very organic aura, which reminds one (as another comment noted) of a giant sand-drip castle.

This was one of the best things I've ever seen in my whole entire life!! It was amazing all the archutechture and different shapes and moldings. It was mind blowing.

Gaudi ran out into the street and was run over by a tram. About 40 yrs too late, IMO. What is it about this comic book architecture that impresses people? George Orwell used to say that he never forgave the anarchists for not blowing that thing up when they had the chance. I am with George on this one.

Great art! Another interesting thing is that you can visit the chapel of Sagrada Familia and inside of the chapel is buried Gaudí.

OMG, If you go to Barcelona you have to see this. It is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. The arcitect's name is Gaudi and all his work is just breath taking. Sagrada Familia is this huge church that is still being built. It has huge steples that you can walk up and see all of Barcelona. It is just amazing to think that someone dreamed it up.

WOW! I do recommend visiting this cathedral. Once, twice, three, four times...it will never be the same. Because the building of this masterpiece is still in progress after so many years...and what you can see today is just a lateral wing of Gaudí's original project (which is probably going to be cut/modified someway or other). And what I strongly recommend is getting to the top of La Sagrada Familia...without the lift (this for lazy people...unlike you;-)). What you will see is going to be a great reward for all of you, I guarantee...from the sea, to the Northern side of Barcelone, the Parc Guell, the Montjuïc to the South, las Ramblas, the modernity of the new Barcelona behind you...don't you feel like taking your plane right now?

Amazing. Hard to believe this vision came from the late 1800's. Take the tour if possible, it really helps to orient yourself.

Amazing architecture -- unique in all of Europe by Antonio Gaudí. There are many other amazing bits of architecture throughout Barcelona by Gaudí. Parc Guëll is another top attraction.

One of the most interesting architectural examples in Europe. New school, fantastic creativity and cohesive design. Great for architecture buffs, especially given the current, on going construction.

If you have ever wanted to see an alien in person, this church is for you. I was blown away the first time I saw it. We turned a corner and there it was, looming over the rest of the buildings, fascinating, and bizarre.

I love the church, even though it is still incomplete. Guadi's work adds sooo much character to the city. His work is so full of detail that one never gets bored looking at it. From far it may appear like a melted sand castle, but once up close, the time spent to detail is amazing. Views of the city from the tower is great as well.

the most awesome site in all of spain (imho!) :)

Even if it was never finished it presents a huge complexity. It is very unconventional. It looks from far away like a termite house. There are rumors that its creator was part of an exoteric movement. Very sensual form. I love the intensely colored tiles.

The work is brilliant. There was some very outof the box thinking going on there.

The Sagrada Familia is a truly unique building. This melange of styles is not always beautiful, but it is breathtaking. One only wonders if it will ever be finished.

This my friends is really, really cool. Right in the middle of Barcelona stands this enormous Cathedral La Sagrada Familia and it is HUGE. The most incredible part of it is that is still unfinished after over 100 years. They're still working on it you can watch them working. You can also see the changes in the architectural style of the Cathedral over the years. In the meantime they've put an elevator in to the top of one of the spires and the view is awesome. Just take off and start exploring, there are stairways and nooks and cranny's all over the place, little peep holes from little balcony's and tower windows. It'll take at least a couple of hours to explore so be in a mood to walk. The really amazing thing is that they are probably only about 2/3 done, maybe!

It's still under construction - so be prepared for cranes, off-limits areas, and obstructions to your view - but La Sagrada Familia's wild Gaudi architecture that blurs the ancient with the modern is definitely worth the trip.
