It may be a big chunk of rock from outer space, and that would be outstanding if true. Be careful with your babies, there are dingoes all over the place!

I found a copy of the Dingo Polka being played on a digerido for your enjoyment.

If memory serves, Ayer's Rock is a meteorite or some other space rock that hit Australia. I suppose the effect on the surrounding landscape is similar to Devil's Tower, as it dominates the area inspiring awe for the natives, who don't want tourists clamoring all over the rock. To climb or not to climb seems tough decision. On one hand, respect for other peoples wishes dictates not to climb, but respect for my desires would suggest the opposite.

A powerfully spiritual place; completely awe-inspiring and unique. Beware of falling into the typical imperialists' trap of climbing Uluru as traditional tribes request that their spiritual home be respected and not desecrated further by tourists. It is far more indcredible to walk the 9km perimeter - highly reccommended.

Uluru and the Olgas (about 30 minutes away) were interesting but not overwhelming to look at. But once you are there and begin to learn the history behind the Rock and its significance to the indiginous people of Australia, you can't help but value the experience of actually being there. The conflict over whether or not to climb the Uluru, or to respect the Aborigines requests not to climb, was made easy once I began to understand the significance as well.

Natives are not allowed to purchase alcohol! But they will try to get tourists to buy it for them. Beware, there are heavy fines for doing this. I was approached, and declined, but it could have been entrapment situation.
