The first doo-wop record to be a number-one pop hit in the United States was "The Great Pretender" by the Platters (1955). Formed in L.A. in 1953, the Platters quickly became a pop and R&B success, eventually earning the distinction of being the first black group of the era to top the pop charts. Considered the most romantic of all the doo wop groups, with hits such as "Only You," "The Great Pretender," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and "Harbor Lights."
