Teotihuacan was Mexico City's predecessor, founded around the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D., and rose quickly to establish itself as one of the most populous and most expansive urban centers in the "New World." The ancient city flourished for many years until it fell mysteriously around the 7th century. The city's original name, the languages spoken there, and the ethnic groups that inhabited the city remain unknown.
