The only reason I can see Brownback coming up is a scenario in which the prospects looked so bad for the GOP that the party committee realized anyone running would be tainted forever (cf. Mondale or Dukakis), so they brought out Brownback just to "take one for the team." I guess he'd be a somewhat freakish version of Goldwater, with even less of a chance. But while Goldwater actually had a sharp idea or two (albeit amidst a lot of stupid ones), Brownback doesn't have any smart ideas, period. Even his religious faith can't really be taken seriously (what was it again today?). I would give him a slight edge in intelligence over Coburn, though.

Medieval. Certifiable. Will insure a dem. victory. Brownback is people's exhibit A as to why Kansas is the cultural and academic laughingstock of the nation due to Sammy being on the wrong side of almost every major issue. This goofball gets a raging erection at the thought of turning a free society into a group of drooling hillside protestants who treat science, inquiry, education, and freedom the way that Pilate treated his imagined prophet. McCain is too smart for this (even though his brain is overrated) and I think he will make a better choice to increase his chances.

He brings a social conservatism to the package, and he seems less likely than some on this list to step on his dick, but I very much doubt if any of the also-rans is on the McCain shortlist for VP.
Although I suspect he's way ahead of Giuliani.

If McCain wants to pick a social conservative to help him shore up his base within the party, I would recommend that he select Mike Huckabee. Brownback is a good person and is certainly eminently qualified to be President (a key qualifying factor for the job), but he wouldn't energize the ticket, nor would he help the GOP carry any particular state or region. But he's definitely a good candidate, very thoughtful, if very conservative on some issues.

Only if the GOP was looking to cede the Presidency to the Dems.

I haven't heard much mention of Brownback, but this is another guy I'd like to see considered for VP. While I really like him, I realize that he is probably too conservative to help out the election. It's too bad though.
