It's usually code for "I'm way off topic here, but trying to sound creative"

It typically means,"You're wrong, but I don't know the right answer. Find the right answer by tomorrow morning, I won't be of any help because I'm clueless on how to actually approach this problem. But it better be done by tomorrow."

Boxes ? We ain't got no boxes. We don't need no boxes. I don't have to show you any stinking boxes. Blam! Blam! Blam!

I have asked (without success) to officially ban this expression at my office. This trite expression is used by those who seek excuses or lack certain pieces of concrete knowledge. Office double-speak like this is when red flags go up for me.

Whenever I catch my staff thinking outside the box, I read them the riot act and tell them to get back inside their boxes. And they have to put their bike helmets back on too.

Falling back on this phrase is usually a sign of, um, failing to think outside the box.

I thought it was a "creative" phrase until it got overused.

I like this phrase! But people do seem to use it while they are insulting somebody, so in that since I don't like it.

I'll keep thinking inside the box, as long as they let me smoke in the box.
