If you really believe that a degree is the route to being "somebody" I don't want to know you. I worked long and hard for mine and it gave me a momentary sense of accomplishment. But the brightest people who exit those halls diploma in hand are not the ones who feel that this is the ticket granting them the right to a superior title. They are instead the ones who leave with the realization that the learning process has really just begun. I will never forget someone telling me in all sincerity that I had to respect him because HE had a masters degree. I thought of all the people in my life who actually deserved that respect - none of which held degrees at all - and thought how sad that this deluded dim wit and the biggest nobody I'd ever met - actually believed what he'd said.

A college degree doesn't necessarily guarantee a job....however, it's helpful. Now I need to get my master's degree.

Although having a degree might carry a certain amount of prestige, it doesn't necessarily make the person. Everybody is a somebody.

Education and experience are things that I value in my house. . .it pays the bills and lays the foundations for the relationships that I value. . .yes, I wasn't jack-squat until my degrees were finished because education for its own sake matters, but I also have bills to pay and responsibilites to keep- and they really aren't possible without education both personal, professional, and formally recognized.

Bah. Don't have one, having dropped out of university to run away and join the circus called politics. Don't miss it either. I know far too many complete buffoons with letters after their name to be too much impressed.
