Arkansas entered the championship game, hoping to win its second consecutive championship. Meanwhile UCLA was making its first appearance in the NCAA title game since 1980, and looking to win its first title in the post-John Wooden era. Things didn't look good for UCLA early in the game, when Tyus Edney left the game due to a wrist injury (which he suffered in the Bruins semi-final victory over Oklahoma State) just three minutes into the game. Arkansas jumped out to a 12-5 lead and it appeared that the Razorbacks were going to defeat the Bruins in a laugher. However reserve sophomore guard Cameron Dollar played a gutsy game and was able to break the Arkansas press allowing the fast-break Bruins to get repeated layups and dunks. The Bruins also were aided by senior forward Ed O'Bannon played one of the great games in NCAA Championship history by scoring 30 points and grabbing 17 rebounds while freshman guard Toby Baily added 26 points, including an offensive rebound dunk late with 4:30 remaining game, after Arkansas had cut UCLA's lead to four points, which kick started a 12-0 Bruin run and which sewed up the 11th national championship for UCLA.
