As I understand it, the original phrase was "pushing the outside of the envelope" and came from test pilots pushing a prototype aircraft past the limits of its specs.

I understand what is meant by pushing the envelope, but can't for the life of me figure out where the phrase came from. Who the heck uses envelopes anymore anyway?
