Anybody being incinerated in a movie is disturbing, but if it's someone like Freddie Krueger or Elizabeth Selwyn (the witch played by the riveting Patricia Jessel in a low-budget gem from the early 60's entitled "City Of The Dead" aka "Horror Hotel", which also had Christopher Lee in it), you can kinda understand it. Howie wasn't malevolent; he was fanatical and obtuse and stubborn, but he was basically decent and committed to a righteous and just cause; namely, determining what had happened to a mysteriously missing young girl. "The Wickerman" is now available on DVD, and is apparently as close to what the director originally intended as anyone is likely to find (its supposedly been cut and re-cut over the years). A different, and worthwhile horror movie that I heartily recommend.
