There has been progress here.
On the positive side, in December 2007, the Bush administration achieved one of its 2001 targets to open or expand 1200 community health centers.
However, the High Poverty County Presidential Initiative is moving along relatively slowly - the first grants were announced in August 2007.
In the long term, the expansion of the community health centers is threatened by the complete discontinuation of funding for Title VII health professions education programs in the federal budget, programs which play a vital role in enabling the education of the medical professionals urgently needed to staff these centers.
