It is a gripping movie about sailor life in a foreign land where Americans are not welcome. The cinemotography is breathtaking. The story is intense. There is war, political intrigue, love, death. Steve Maqueen is unforgettable as a loner machinist who feels his machines are his world and wants to be left alone but the world butts in. I know my explanation is kind of lame but this is truly a majestic move, perhaps even epic. It is as relevant now as it was then. A good movie to watch on a weekend night with a good friend.

What is a gunboat doing there, you might ask? It is a long story but comes from the weakness of China around the turn of the 20th Century. The film does a passable job showing the arising force of nationalism in China and the Chinese resentment about foreign intervention and privilege.

Somewhat forgotten these days, but it is a striking and moving film.
