I could have done without the father-son thing, and the love story angle, but the story is well done showing the risk taken by Nimitz to set the strategy, the well calculated risk in the operation and finally the risk taken tactically by the commanders and even the risk taken by the air groups to stretch out their last resources. This is one of the more remarkable battles ever fought by the U.S. Navy, and the film does a good job showing it.
The mistakes and bad luck of the IJN also comes across well from a historical viewpoint.
