After coming up short several times (against Georgetown, Arkansas and Syracuse) Pete Carrill in his final year of coaching finally pulled out an upset in the NCAA Tournament by defeating defending champion UCLA (although UCLA had lost three starters--including two team leaders in Ed O'Bannon after winning the 95 title), with the winning basket being scored on a back-door lay up by Gabe Lewullis on a bounce pass from Steve Goodrich. This loss is easily the most embarrasing moment in UCLA history and Jim Harrick who finally quieted his critics in 95 by winning the championship was back on the hot seat after this game and was never able to redeem himself as he was fired at the beginning of the 96-season for falsifying reports for a recruiting dinner. Perhaps the worst thing for UCLA was when they jumped out to a 7-0 lead which perhaps got their players thinking the win would be easy. However as the game unfolded the tempo of the game favored Princeton and they pulled out the win.
