Theres something innately humorous about cats to begin with. The idea of cats as comedians is something like old 50s and 60s super-serious actors like Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen showing up in off-the-wall comedies like Airport and Naked Gun. Its that contrast or maybe even fine line between calm, cool and collected and totally whacked that can be so hysterically appealing. Though not as prolific in his work as some I still believe that Toonces easily falls into this category and has earned a place along with other such classic feline comedians as Bill the Cat, Mr. Jinx, Crazy Cat, and Sylvester. And, even though the Toonces SNL skits came along after I stopped watching the show regularly, once I discovered them, I was an immediate fan - enough so that I even purchased a Best of video tape. Like another weird but original SNL skit, Mr. Bill, Toonces just never ceased to crack me or himself up.
