I agree with Irishgit that this series needed one more season to wrap things up. I did a little reading on Deadwood, Dakota Territory, during this series. George Hearst, for instance, went on to consolidate the mining claims and founded Homestake Mine, for decades the largest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere. Seth Bullock was involved with Teddy Roosevelt and helped raise troops for the Spanish American War. He rode in the parade for Teddy's second inauguration. He lived in Deadwood for the rest of his life. Calamity Jane had a further career in Deadwood and more.

Brilliant writing, although the language would stagger a drunken longshoreman, and some first rate acting made this truly great. I watch virtually no TV, so I saw this on DVD after it was cancelled. I would say that it ended one season too soon, in that it needed one more to wrap up the storylines, both historical and otherwise.
