It already has a tomato sauce base, so I don't see the need to add tomatos. I don't like the texture of tomatos in chili, and would definitely prefer mine without it.

Good chili can be made without chunks of tomato.

Adds a nice flavor and can help balance it out.

Tomatoes have been a texture issue for me in the past. I can't quite get past the seeds.

Some diehard chili fans from the southwest say that there is no place for tomatoes in chili. I honestly don't care. I'm putting them in anyway. Another option if you have to go with canned tomatoes is the ones that have diced chilis in them. The peppers don't add a lot of flavor, but this variety of canned tomato usually doesn't seem to have any sugar added.

Depends on the style of chili you are creating. If you need to use these get good stewed whole ones and chop them into quarters. Drain the juice before adding them.

Fresh plum or roma tomatoes if possible. If not get whole (not diced or crushed) canned tomatoes.

The reason for whole instead of diced or crushed is that the latter frequently have sugar added.

I an fixing to set out some Tomatoe plants in a day or so, I plan to plant quite a few, nothing better than a Tomatoe sandwich with a giant slice of Vidillia Onion with it.

If you can get some cheap plum tomatoes they work well. . .if your produce stinks, get some canned ones and you'll be just fine.
