Tomato sauce is pretty important, although you might be able to get away with some other variations. A steak sauce or barbecue sauce would make a different flavored chili that may have potential.

I prefer homemade tomato juice to store bought tomato sauce, but the commercial stuff will do in a pinch.

Not essential. I prefer whole stewed tomatoes, or diced tomatoes if you must. Lots of chili recipes don't even need any at all.

Avoid the pre-packaged or bottled "chili sauces" and buy the nasty looking little cans of tomato with the badly printed labels.

You want the kind that is so thick you have to open both ends of the can and push it out. If its right, it can stand upright without assistance. Figure about one can for every three diners.

Those small-cans you see by the trashy sugar-infested canned spaghetti sauces (8 oz.) will work nicely. . .cheap but very vital to the dish. . .
