Taking Jake Long will really help out the Dolphins. This team has lacked a quality LT for many years now, and in fact, it may have contributed to the revolving door they've had at QB since Dan Marino retired. They have had absolutely no stability in the game's most important position; 13 quarterbacks have started for the team in the past 7 years! Long's strength though is run blocking, thus Ronnie Brown may be the greatest beneficiary of this pick. Philip Merling was a great value pick in the 2nd round; his pass blocking and pass rushing skills will likely make him Jason Taylor's heir apparent. I was surprised that QB Chad Henne dropped to the Dolphins at the end of the 2nd Round. He will give them an extra option at QB. They already invested another 2nd rounder last year on John Beck. Nothing wrong in my view with having lots of young QB's on the roster, since they're a valuable commodity in the NFL. Look at Atlanta's trade last year of Matt Schaub to Houston for multiple picks in the top half of the draft.

Overall, the Dolphins spent three picks on the offensive line, three on the defensive line, two 6th rounders on RB's and one pick on a QB. Perhaps they should have used an extra pick on another WR, or a cornerback, but Parcells and Co. reasoned that the trenches needed to be reinforced, and on that point I tend to agree. With the talent the Dolphins already have, it is not unforseeable that they could improve to 7-9 or 8-8 type record. Their run defense, which was a major problem last year has already been shored up both in the draft and in free agency. Much will ride on their QB play and whether or not they can establish a running game behind Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Their WR corps is still questionable, but this is a team that's still in the rebuilding stages. Basically the Dolphins strategy this year was to select the best player on their draft board at the moment regardless of position, always a good strategy for a team with so many needs like the Dolphins. You can't go wrong by picking the best player.

Miami had the first pick in the draft and made what the experts consider a good yet safe pick with Jake Long. I think drafting a tackle is a good bet to rebuild a team. The Dolphins also got good value in Phillip Merling to start the 2nd round. I had heard he was supposed to be a top 15 pick but slid because of a "sports hernia." They were also able to get one of the top QBs in the draft in Chad Henne, which addresses a major need for them. Miami has a lot more needs than other teams right now, but they made a good step in the right direction with this draft.
