I think he still holds the American league record for strikeouts in a season by a lefthander (if not, he's damn close) . . .Waddell was a bizarre man who drank so much the sportswriters called him the 'sousspaw' and (to quote from the Ken Burns' baseball film) "couldn't quite remembered how many women he'd married". . .a colorful fan favorite who was passed from team to team and eventually banished to the minors. He died of TB from helping victims of a flood before 40. . .weird and talented pitcher to say the least.

Despite his mercurial talent, it is probable that Waddell, if he lived today, would never play in the Major Leagues. Instead he would be shunted off to compete with rubber tipped javelins in mentally handicapped games.

Waddell was a tragic, frustrating, impossible, heroic figure of the early 20th century, coupling what was likely a form of Downs Syndrome with a mammoth thirst for alcohol and an ungovernable temper.

His great years came with the A's before even the ever-patient Connie Mack had enough of him, but he still had enough left to be effective with a bad Browns team.

One of the most fascinating/ bizarre personalities in the game's history, Waddell, a dominant, fireballing, HOF lefthander, really had his best years with the A's, but had some good if not great years the last few seasons of his career in St. Louis at the end of the first decade of the last century.
