2.5 The Browns of the early 20's had Urban Shocker who was a legitimate #1 at the time, and several 3/ 4 guys who would've been relievers or spot starters for most clubs. In 1922 Van Gilder won 19 games and was probably better the next year- he went 16-17 the following year with a low 3.06 ERA for a 5th place, mediocre team, but was usually more of a fourth starter sort of guy- mediocre to bad in most other seasons, as were The Browns themselves, though this was their best decade. Also played for Detroit.

Solid right handers who won eighty-eight games for the Browns in the twenties before being shipped off to Detroit for his final seasons.

Like all Browns pitchers he suffered from terrible defense and spotty run support, although he did manage a couple of winning seasons.
