I saw Bill Maher being interviewed by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show the other night regarding his new film and he made what I felt to be an interesting point. He said (and I paraphrase), "I have the luxury to not believe in religion because I've had a good life, but in talking to an inmate in some prison who says, 'All I have is Jesus,' I have to say I can see where they're coming from. Given their circumstances, who am I to tell them that they only thing they have to cling to in their lives is bogus?" That's something I've believed. My grandmother had a tough, tough life, and probably the only thing she had to lean on to get her through it mentally and emotionally was her religion. Like Maher, I'm an agnostic, and if I have any religious beliefs at all, they tend toward Buddhism, but I recognize there are good people out there who don't use their religious beliefs as a club or a method of asserting control over others. Unfortunately, I think those who do use their religious beliefs, whether those religious beliefs are genuine or for the purpose of manipulation, as a club or a method of asserting control over others predominate.

Feeling lonely and being alone are not the same. But in either case, God is always there because He is Omnipresent. Now, whether you are aware of it or not, it another thing. But He is there. Always.

This isn't me, but it works for some, and I don't have issue with it. We all need help sometimes, but there's no one right place to find it.
