One possible use is to suspend your food in a tree, out of the reach of a prowling bear.

Of course, this has the effect of making the average bear think:

"Hmmmm, food up in a tree. Tasty looking guy in a tent...."

An old timer who did a lot of trail rides and camping said that rope is the first three items on your list.
