Trial and error is the best way to find the right lure. If you are fishing for largemouth bass, a good lure is definitely important. But even if bass bite on one kind of lure in one farm pond, it's likely that the same lure won't work in a nearby lake, and they lure that works in that lake won't work in a nearby river. I haven't gone bass fishing in years, but I had my best luck in one of my dad's ponds with spoons, and in the other with some little green rubbery lures that I'm not even sure that they make anymore.
