The name given to the oolichan or oulachon, uthlecan, or eulachon, a small ocean fish that runs up rivers to spawn in a similar manner to salmon. The words oolichan et al come from the Chinook language, and the fish has been a critical part of the traditional Indian diet.
It is called an Indian Candle because its fat content is so high that if dried and threaded with a wick, it can be burned as a candle.
