I kind of think McCain would be a figurehead on this one. I'm pretty sure McCain and Obama don't know anything, let alone the economy. Just bring back the two dollar bill, and let's call it a day.

You know, in England, we appoint Chancellors for this kind of thing. Not that they are necessarily any better...

Kind of important during this worst economic downturn since the depression.

This is off the charts dumb. He MUST be an expert. Isn't that why he is running?
twansalem 08/26/2008
OK, then show me a candidate who is an expert on everything. Oh, never mind, that person doesn't exist.
Voting for the president is voting for the potential administration as much (or maybe more) as for the individual person.

Most Presidents aren't scholars in economics. McCain readily admits that he knows little about economics. Neither does Obama as a matter of fact. Not that McCain is completely ignorant and unable to answer basic questions about such things, but that he doesn't have experts knowledge. The president has broad strategic goals on matters like fiscal/economic matters and they delegate the details to his subordinates. You can't expect the President to know a lot about everything after all. Judge him based on his broad objectives and goals.

I know some RIA reviewers may not be aware of this, but Presidents have the ability to hire advisors and appoint cabinet members. One can hire the expertise in areas of weakness.

The President is like a CEO...he does not need to be an expert on everything, but he sure as hell better be a great decision maker. I trust that McCain is smart enough to listen to the right people about economics.

Every politician should be cursed with such honesty.
lmorovan 05/19/2008
If he did admit it, he is honest. I like honesty. No candidate is expert in anything, they are politicians. And as such, they will find the right people to counsel him on economic matters. I see this as a plus.

McCain can't seem to keep his story straight. Maybe it's the lobbyists running his campaign.
magellan 05/19/2008
Eh, I think this was more of a misstatement than anything else. His record is pretty consistent as a slasher of government waste and a believer in the free market. As long as he doesn't flip on these two issues, that's probably enough for me.
