The S&L scandal was one of the largest frauds perpetrated against the American people, and McCain accepted over $112,000 from Charles Keating to intervene on his behalf.

Very troubling, but not absolutely damning. The contributions to McCain were largely not directly from Keating but from a host of friends and supporters, and wasn't deemed worthy of indictment or even much investigation at the time. I've seen no evidence of a continuing pattern, and its unclear to me that McCain acted unethically, although there is no doubt to me that his actions were politically unwise. For a pragmatist like me, however, that's almost a worse sin.

Update: Four were Democrats : D5/19/08: I object! I brought all this up months ago, now Gellan gets all the credit! I can't win around here!

It'll only be relevant if they attack Biden on the plagiarism issue. Otherwise, there should be a sort of statute of limitations after awhile. Unless of course there's evidence of a continuing pattern, which I haven't seen.

Look, as an Arizona guy I know more about the slimy piece that was Charles Keating than most people probably do. Keating was connected to then Governor Evan Mecham even, who was removed from office by a voter referendum after refusing to step down despite calls from McCain and Jon Kyl. If I remember correctly Mecham made some dough off of the whole whole thing, so the responsible voters of Arizona kicked his ass to the curb. Now, did Keating try to get them to go easy on him by throwing some money around? Sure, but if you look at the money in question he didn't exactly bribe McCain. That total is a tally of all contributions by anyone who connected to him in less steps than they could be connected to Kevin Bacon, more than likely. Did his ass still go to jail? Damn skippy he did. That was omitted from the item description for some odd reason and since Keating did time I doubt this is going to be a big thing unless a strategist is running out of options.

Could be for those that remember it but for everyone else probably not as much.

Like Hillary, he wasn't indicted.

Did he take a bribe? I'll give this a 4 if there is proof and a conviction.
