We decided to feed our baby organic formula because of a large double-blind study that found a much higher level of pesticide metabolites in the blood of infants fed with conventionally-grown formula and baby food. It seems like common sense that, since babies are so small, the fewer chemicals they imbibe the better for their healthy development. The problem with organic formula is that it can be hard to find, and typically costs about 30% more than the regular stuff.
Similac Organic is a readily available organic formula but recent articles suggest health risks because it is a lot sweeter than other baby formulas. Similac Organic is sweetened with cane sugar (sucrose). Some pediatricians warn that this is an unusual sugar to use in baby formula, because sweeter, cane sugar consumption in infants has been linked to childhood obesity. In fact, the European Union will have banned all sucrose in baby formula by 2009. Because of this we switched to Earth's Best, which offers a formula that is sweetened with organic lactose instead of cane sugar.
