He was a fine guitarist- Fleetwood Mac's three guitar lineup was quite influential - and a decent enough singer, but a horrible lyricist- some of his lyrics could be bettered by a fifth grader. Peter Green's problems led to Spencer and Kirwan having to shoulder more of the load. This is an anachronism for the blues/ hard rock/ psychedelia band, an early example of power pop on Kiln House, a 1970 album which featured mostly blues, country, and 50's revivalism. The lyrics are inept, but there is something honest in Kirwan's lyrical inability and sincerity, and the playing is quite good. Early Fleetwood Mac's guitarists were all cursed- Green had problems with acid, homelessness, and mental instability, Spencer wound up joining a bizarre cult called The Children of God, and Kirwan later spent time in a mental hospital.
