It was popular dance music for the masses, when in human history has that represented the best of a generation's musical achievements?

An artistic black hole. Sheer cheese. . .although some will remember it fondly. . .

People still think that they are too cool for disco-but they are cultural snobs mostly and I loved disco, it was fun, like the 70's and most of it sounded good. Most of the music nowadays just sucks!

Oh yeah – no argument – the Disco Era was an over-the-top gaudy little flash in the pan to be sure. But, regardless of the cotton candy quality for which it became famous – and which somewhat oddly generated so much vitriol among the uh, “musical purists” then and now (whose own 20-something music collections and tastes would be interesting to critique) - I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy some aspects of those couple of years to a certain degree. Though I was never a big fan of the guadier clothes (with the exception of cotton I actually hated most fabrics used throughout the 70’s) I did enjoy the beat of the music and I loved dancing. So I do not apologize for the fact that I really enjoyed ABBA, the Bee Gees and few other selections from one hit wonder artists/groups of the era that I can no longer recall off the top of my head. I do not apologize for my belled pants, mini-skirts, chunky shoes, tube tops, and copious eyeliner or for wearing my hair tied up in a bandana and down to my waist – and you can feel free to do the same concerning the fashions, fads and music of your youth.

A bunch of folks in neon colored polyester, with ugly shirts open to show enough medallions to put an Aztec Priest to shame, dancing to the worst music of the latter half of the century. That's about as ungroovy as it gets.

*numbah vomits*UPDATE: You know why Disco died? It died because I was born in '78, and Disco knew I would not allow it to remain living much longer...

Look , I didn't grow up in the era. However I am familiar with disco. It was the techno of the 70's. Trival dance music that was pretty damn cheesy. Sorry all you fifty somethings I just had to rip disco a new one.

Disco was the zenith of White Man's evolution...his finest hour...his moment of near-Godliness...when he could openly express his superiority.
It was "The Age of the White Man's Overbite"

I wasn't alive in the 70s, but I have to admit I have a weak spot for some good disco music - Donna Summer, KC & the Sunshine Band, Bee Gees - good stuff right there, good stuff. If you live in the Long Island/New York City area, on KJOY 98.3, they play disco music every Saturday night (don't tell anyone I know that!), and it's really fun to hear all these classic songs that you can sing and dance to. Yay disco!
