The Carol Burnett Show 3

It made me laugh as a kid,but I don't think it fits the "groovy" category.I have to give it at least 3 stars, though, because the cast was excellent.Tim Conway was always doing something unscripted and you could see the others trying SO hard not to loose it!

Whether or not you like Carol Burnett, I don't think she could ever be described as "groovy"

Who wouldn't love Carol, who I'm proud to say,was born in San Antonio, just like me, and was and still is such a wonderful and gifted entertainer. Vickie Lawrence is a gem and was superbly funny in this show as Mama-as she was in Mama's Family as well.

I don't remember watching this show - or much TV at all in the '60s and '70s.

I was much too busy living my own life.

However, I'm giving Carol Burnett five stars for FRESNO.

The Carol Burnett Show 3

I tend to think of Carol Burnett in the same way I think of Lucille Ball-- I liked their TV shows as a kid, I think they were both immensely talented women in their own way, but their comedic shtick wore progressively thinner the older I got. Burnett's show I watched intermittently as an adolescent-- the funniest part of it, for me, was watching Tim Conway crack up Harvey Korman, but even that starts to wear thin after awhile. It's not a show I remember with dislike, but it's not one I have any great desire to re-visit either.

The Carol Burnett Show 3

Carol Burnett and crew had some very good – maybe even a couple of great – moments. But, though I enjoyed watching it back when – it always seemed to be lacking something. I think the problem was that this brand of humor reflected a little more of the past than it foreshadowed the future. It had a little bite – but not nearly enough to make much impact. This show represents for me the last of the old (and tired) TV variety shows rather than something in the least bit innovative. Comparison with the more groundbreaking stuff just around the corner (SNL) is like the difference in hearing someone deliver a pre-packaged joke vs overhearing the wise cracks of the smart aleck kid in the back row of your high school government class. I may never remember the punch line of one of those pat jokes – but, 30 years later I’m still chuckling at the remarks of the kid in the back row. The kid may not have been very nice next to the one delivering the joke but he had one thing the other one lacked – relevancy…and that is always a crucial element in humor.

Maybe I’ve come to expect a little too much from entertainment but, I believe that comedy is a very important form of human expression. I also feel that a well developed sense of humor and ability to laugh at the world are vital to good personal and public mental health. This show was at best an enjoyable diversion capable of granting a few giggles. Sometimes that’s enough – often, for me, it is not.

Most people I know who saw it in it's original run seem to find it hilarious. I've seen some reruns recently, and I'd call it mildly amusing. Maybe the comedy just hasn't aged well?

For starters, I think you missed by a decade the appropriate use of the term Groovy. Second regardless sof the decade, Carol Burnett, for all of her comic chops was never what I'd call groovy, hip or cool. She was strictly for squares daddy-o.

back in the 60s into the 70s.when  variety shows were still popular. Carol Burnett had a good show. funny skits, music. good cast to support her. tim conway, Harvey korman{rip} vicky Lawrence. and good guest starts. I liked her movie takeoffs. like "Went with the Wind" and sunset boulevard"  the Mama's family skits started here{and were also better} remember her sign off song "I'm so glad we had this time together" and her ear tug to her grandmother. sitting on a pail as the cleaning lady. nice show to watch on a saturday night.

They were truly a talented comedy troupe. I place them right up there with Laurel & Hardy, Lucille Ball, and Jerry Lewis. You can always count on them to induce some genuine laughter.
