Again, groovy is probably not a great word to describe all the great things Fred Rogers taught children over the years. While not the most masculine guy in the world, he definitely was a very positive influence on generations of kids.

Mr. Rogers' (show) technically began in 1963 as 15 min. segments out of Toronto. He moved his act back to Pittsburg - where he is originally from - a few years later and it went to a half-hour format in 1967. I remember hearing of the show from a friend who lived in Pittsburg during her early childhood so I was aware of him. However, by the time Mr. Rogers' migrated to PBS and drew national recognition I was long past the show's target age. Given my childhood TV host frame of reference, my feeling was that he as a bit pale by comparison to one Captain Kangaroo. Even our local guy - Bill Jackson - who hosted a Mickey Mouse club revival show was cooler in my opinion since he also featured live cartooning. I am grateful to him for one thing though; had he not gone to PBS and made it possible for me to become familiar with his limp shtick then I wouldn't have gotten the same enjoyment I did out of Eddie Murphy's Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood little parody on SNL in the 1980's. Now THAT's what I call entertainment!

According to Wikipedia, "Mr. Rogers" original run was from Feb 19, 1968 to August 31, 2001, so I would say right off hand that there were a couple of generations that grew up with Mr. Rogers, and reruns began Sept. 3, 2001 to Sept. 1, 2008. I think he was quite an icon.

Can't say much about the 70s (I was born in '82), but I was a fan in the mid-80s. Sure beats the heck out of more recent kids shows like Barney.

Groovy? Somehow that doesn't seem like the proper descriptor.
