Groovy? I liked it as a kid, don't know if there's something groovy about Gene Wilder's Jim Morrisonesque loud, acid inspired spooky poem on the boat, or fat German kids going up a pipe, or orange dwarfs with green hair and overly moralistic, sanctimonious, songs, or The Man from Chico and the Man and Charlie's grandma evidently engaging in swinging with the kid's other grandparents.. Kind of creepy not groovy.

this was the willy wonka that was around when I was a kid. those kid actors were my age way back then. { can you believe that four out of five of them hit the big 5-0?} Gene Wilder was perfect as Willy wonka. the songs were okay. nice story. good family movie.

Yes, I prefer the non-creepy version without the Michael Jackson look-a-like.
