Alice Cooper has always been a smart guy. While he did have an admitted alcohol problem in the 70's, Alice was always crazy like a fox. Back in the 70's (especially in the early and mid 70's) it didn't take a lot to "shock" an audience. It also didn't hurt that Alice put out some of the greatest hard rock albums ever with stuff like Killer (with his original band) and the epic Welcome To My Nightmare which set the standard for live stageshows. As the years have gone by, most of what Alice did now seems harmless and decades later Coop is still capable of putting out high energy live shows and still puts out solid albums. Alice in recent years has admitted, Alice was always intended to be vaudeville. Cooper was definitely one of the greatest things about the 70's and remains great to this day.

Alice once referred to himself as "the band that drove a stake through the heart of the flower children" so I think it's safe to say he represents the zenith of anti-grooviness.

Vince certainly hasn't ever been sincere about anything (except perhaps his reactionary politics). He used his band to get rich and famous and then dumped them. He used his fans to get rich and famous and laughed at them all the way to the bank. By now, it should be obvious that he only pretended to be weird in order to make money.

For all that he was or was not - for as little as his music and persona did not appeal to me personally - I always felt that Alice was laughing his ass off at the end of the day. More recently - his appearance in commercials has been pretty funny.
