I never disliked him, although I never liked him enough to go out and buy any of his records (although a few years ago I did go out and buy a greatest hits CD). He had an interesting voice, and his songs, although they sometimes had a tendency to meander on for too long, generally had a soothing sort of mournfulness about them that made them vastly preferable to the majority of what was being played on the radio in those days. I particularly liked "Carefree Highway"...I could even say I loved it...and it was that song in particular that finally prompted me to go out and purchase the CD. It gets played fairly often on the radio, but I tend to tune into it when it's halfway over, or almost completely over, which can be frustrating to the point of madness (especially when I'm stuck in traffic on Rte. 287 at the time with no decent CDs in my car), particularly when I always seem to tune into "Piano Man" at the beginning every single time. Almost as if the Music/Radio Gods were having some fun at my expense.

The word groovy always sounded almost self-consciously silly to me - like something Greg Brady as Johnny Bravo would say. To stay in the vernacular of the decade though - Gordon Lightfoot's music might more accurately be described as mellow. Works better for me any way.

I agree with Oscar, I am not sure groovy would fit Gordon Lightfoot, but he certainly warrants 3 or 4 songs on my iPod for sure.

Gordon, in the 60's, was a well regarded singer songwriter that penned a few songs like " For Lovin' Me" and " Early Mornin' Rain" that were covered quite a few times by others, though his own career wasn't particularly successful in commercial terms, in America anyway. In the 70's he had the knack of coming up with some memorable big hits that had a broad appeal- the kind of songs that everyone from easy listening afficionados to singer songwriter enthusiasts to rock fans enjoyed: " Carefree Highway," " If You Could Read My Mind," and " Sundown" in particular were terrific. Groovy may not be the best word, but certainly he has my respect.

Sundown was my favorite song as a kid, and still is as an adult!
