Maybe he was including Canadian provinces too. Or other countries.Perhaps he's considering annexing new lands. You never know.

Umm, Lets see. We have Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa. That accounts for four of the Extra Seven, can't help but wonder what the other three are. Honestly, this sounds like Something Quail would say.

Yeah, I think that's wrong last time I remember it.
Victor83 05/31/2009
Obviously, he was counting NY, Cali., and the New England area.

I would like to know what the 10 new states are.

i would never vote for him. he is a snake and he is stupid

He was up here in New Hampshire a lot. He even visited Carroll County. That was a waste of time.

I'm sure none of the people who are clinging to this as evidence that he is unfit for public office have never made a slip of the tongue. I think it would be an awkward if he continued to stick with his story and claim it to be true. Sometimes I guess its best to say nothing.

If this was George Bush everyone would be getting a hearty laugh, ie That Bush, what an idiot. But it's Obama so it's all good - he was "just tired". It was a gaffe, it was it is. Someone who's got a camera in their face all day is bound to make few of these.
GenghisTheHun 07/30/2008
This is a glaring error, but I suppose he meant the 57 jurisdictions he had to campaign in counting 50 states and DC, Guam, Samoa, Marianas, VI, PR and Democrats Abroad. It's a slip of the tongue and should be ingnored except we have morons in the press and sharks waiting to carve up any mistake.
ILikePie 07/30/2008
He looked like he put a worrying amount of thought into the number of states he claimed to have visited, but I'm sure it was a mere slip of the tongue, and Obama isn't geographically backward...

After hearing about this all over the internet, I was expecting it to be a lot more blame worthy than it really was...It is quite obvious that he was just tired, and I am positive that he knows how many states there are. It also seems as if it just a lukewarm attempt at sarcasm that was miffed due to tiredness. Awkward? Not in the least. It seems to me that there are so few important mistakes that he has made that people have to keep referring to this one.

States of depression, elation, contemplation, and fatigue could make for 54 I guess. . .

Approximately the equivalent of misspelling potato (e). Which got more play?
Loerke 06/18/2008
So funny to see the retarded wing of conservatism has turned this into a talking point, with the conspiracy theorists among them seriously believing that Obama was subliminally referring to Arab states (missing the simple fact that Obama was courting primary votes in the seven additional territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands, etc), while the grade-school wing of conservatism decry the candidate for not knowing just about the only thing that they know about the United States.
irishgit 06/18/2008
A momentary mis-speak from a tired candidate. Not the first candidate that has had this happen. Not a big deal, and if this is deciding your vote, you need better medication.
Wiseguy 06/17/2008
Sounds like he was a little tired on the stump, no harm no foul.
louiethe20th 06/16/2008
Awkward yes, scary that he could be Presdient, yes! A prerequisite for running should be knowing how many states we have in the union. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws
