If you count a couple incidents of short term (hours, and once a few days) lockup yes. A mainline joint? No.

A few times - once for 11 days in Tijuana - but never convicted of anything except in the fall of '59 when I was finishing Friday dinner at Bickford's Cafeteria on 42nd Street and a paddy wagon backed up to the door. We diners were separated into "over 25" and "under 25" groups. The over 25s were sent on their way while the rest of us found ourselves being transported to The Tombs. We were never told what we were being arrested for until we made it to Night Court, and even then the charges were vague (disorderly conduct). A friendly cop suggested we plead "guilty" to avoid being locked up for the entire weekend. So, we did, and were sentenced to, "Five Dollars or One Day". When I reached in my pocket for the 5, the friendly officer slapped my hand and said, "Don't waste your money kid, your 'One Day' is over in an hour."Well, it was actually about two hours before we were processed out, and we finally found out what the whole thing was about when we saw the front pages of the NY Mirror and Daily News:67 JUVENILE DELINQUENTS ARRESTED IN TIMES SQUARE RAIDSIt was the election season, and the mayor was making sure the public knew he was tough on crime.

Jail is for suckers who get caught. Prison is full of failed criminals or those with poor representation.I lead a law and order life. . .but during certain moments in my life I understood that is was only the rash and foolish who wound up discussing things with Mr. Buzz-Cut officer. . .I was too busy caring about enjoying myself and getting away with my transgressions.
