I'm about as far from being a Yankees fan as you can get, but this guy was one of the gentlemen of the game, both while he played, and after he retired. As noted by Moosekarloff, he was a talented and entertaining sportscaster, among the best in the business.

Murcer was a better than average player and served as a solitary beam of hope for Yankee fans during the Dark Ages of that franchise. He was a very gifted sportscaster, quite insightful about the finer points of the game, and he had charm and a sense of humor. What was refreshing about him was that he didn't take himself too seriously, yet, was well aware that he was hardly a clown. He was also quite active in charitable causes, which is something the vast majority of pukey celebrities are loathe to do. And, brain cancer is about the worst way to go. So, I was sad to hear of his passing.

I'm not a Yankees fan in the least, and Murcer's playing career took place before my time. He seems like a great player, but he appears to have been overshadowed by all of the other Yankee greats that are household names. Its a shame that he died relatively young, but I didn't know much about him until he passed.
