To IrishGit, I really don't understand what you want in a book. This series may not be perfect, thats physically impossible, but... this is about as close as you can get. and I'm only on book 7. I really thought nothing could top the Sword of Truth series, until I began to read this. I loved that series. But this is indescribable. This is simply the most fantastic story I've ever read. Doubtless when I finish this I'll move on, and maybe find a series to top this, but I've read quite a few books, and this blows everything out of the water. Robert Jordan laid out an incredibly detailed world, with characters you come to know intimately. All this series is is one giant trap, you would have to be a true hater to not follow this through. As for great authors being able to keep their books under 3 long, I've never, repeat NEVER, found a series I've really enjoyed under 5, including Lord of the Rings. A lot of stories got their base in this, Sword of Truth, I can now agree pulled way to much from it, but that was still an excellent series, and goes to show how great this one is. For now definitely my #1 favorite series. and let me end with asking IrishGit to please, let me know some of the series you think top this. If this is poorly written, I would like to see some well written writings. Please, and I don't mean to be sarcastic.

I absolutely love this series. It definitely has some un-unique things in it like magic, it's own version of the devil and god, but Jordan makes them unique by putting natural limits on the use of magic and his version on the light and dark sides are different and deeply interesting.
I'm on book 9 of the series, if that tells you anything, and can't wait to get through it all. In each book, new things are introduced, but mostly the previous story line is further developed so it never get's too overwhelming with too many main characters.
This series is captivating and adictive from the very beginning. I recommend any fantasy lover to try this great series.

The modern fantasy fiction market is glutted with drivel like this. The first book is decent, a well written piece of hack work, but above average for the genre. From there, as is the case in most series of this type, it goes downhill fast, recycling backstory, padding endlessly, and repeating dialogue ad infinitum. The fantasy book market has become overwhelmed by series novels, each of which seems to compete for which can run the longest. I'm sorry guys, but if you can't tell your epic story in 3 books tops, you aren't much of a writer.

One of the greatest if not the best fantasy book series of recent decades, and all-time. Robert Jordan's expansive masterpiece The Wheel of Time series has 11 volume to date, (the last one is being worked on right now by author Brandon Sanderson). Robert Jordan passed away last year, after bravely battling cardiac amyloidosis, a heart disorder. The series has sold over 30 million copies, and in the process has taken generations of young and old people's imaginations to new heights with his very unique and detailed world. Jordan defines magic in his world in an entirely new way unseen in any other fantasy series. Also unique is the way Jordan uses perspectives from a multitude of minor and evil characters to help tell the story. This really brings The Wheel of Time world to life in a myriad of ways. Strong female characters are everywhere in the books, helping to attract a broader audience to the series and the fantasy genre in general. My words can only do so much to praise the works of Robert Jordan, so if you haven't read it already, go read the first volume in the series: The Eye of the World.
