Philip Marlowe is the gold standard of crime novel detectives. A complex, difficult man, brilliantly written by Chandler, he observes and reflects the society around him.

While Chandlers novels are ostensibly crime genre novels (and damn good ones) they are more importantly vehicles for social commentary on the era in which they take place.
