 | irishgit (156) 08/03/2008 | One of the first great novels, written about 250 years ago, Tristram Shandy is more like a modern surrealist novel than one written in its era.
Tristram, the narrator, is a dimwitted, self-important gentleman who tells the story of his birth, life and companions. He is, alas, incompetent to do even that well, taking almost 100 pages to get himself born.
But he is hilarious, a fine naif commentator on the story, his culture and the other characters.
