This is one of the oldest athletic clubs in the United States. The downtown City Club is a one block square eight story building that offers two pools, squash and handball courts, a running track, and several gymnasiums and fitness centers as well as a pro shop, bar, and dining and meeting facilities. There are also 14 rooms serving as accommodations for members and their guests to stay overnight. The lakeside club is located on the golf course and offers tennis as well as a pool and full exercise facilities, a bar, and an extensive dining room.

The best gym I've ever been in. The basketball court is pristine - sticky floors, soft rims, and a giant window looking out on a San Francisco cityscape. There's a bar, and a restaurant, each patron gets their own locker, and you get out of the shower and there are all sorts of personal grooming stuff waiting for you. My favorite thing about the club is that basketball is front and center. Most high end clubs ignore hoops as it is a young man's game, and young men typically can't afford a high end gym. For whatever reason, the Olympic Club has decided to emphasize basketball - they have a league with a fifty game season. They also have a traveling team that plays against other cities' athletic clubs. There's about a year long wait to get in, and there's $1500 or so start up fee, along with $150 or so per month. It's expensive. But it's a world class facility that is a San Francisco landmark. My personal opinion that anybody who loves basketball, San Francisco, and has a career needs to belong to this place. I'm putting myself on the list to sign up. I hope they take credit cards.
